Buttermilk Falls is a 165 ft high cascade in the lower park area. Buttermilk Falls State Park consists of two areas, the upper and lower level. The upper park stream being gentler than it is on the lower level. Buttermilk Falls State Park takes its name from the foaming cascades formed as Buttermilk Creek flows down through the gorge.

The upper park has a small lake (Treman Lake) and a hiking trail through the woods surrounding the lake. Buttermilk Creek cascades through the gorge going over several small waterfalls until it cascades over the 165 ft main falls in the lower area.
