The name "Taughannock" originates either from the Delaware Indian Chief Taughannock or the Delaware Indian word 
taghkanic meaning "great fall in the woods".

This Falls can be seen from the road (Route 89) that passes through the park.

The Park is located near the Village of Trumansburg, in the Township of Ulysses, about 8 miles north of Ithaca, NY on Route 89.
